A really wonderful description of a relationship with Robert Lowell in his BU and Harvard days by a young poet, no longer quite so young, who remembers exactly how it was to be young. The accounts of the classes with Sexton, Plath, Starbucks, and that generation all present are moving and infinitely returnable-to.

It must have been difficult to write, because the first pages are curiously badly written, making me think that Kathleen whom I used to know a bit in the 80s was not as intelligent as I thought her to be, but carry on - it becomes fluent and even lofty.

I had no idea that Kathleen was the daughter of the great Peter Drucker, that she had grown up in Bennington, that it was her baby's death that the Druckers never stopped mourning and thinking about - which caused some friends of mine to be taken up by the Druckers in the 70a on a vacation in Hawaii simply because my friends' little girl was the same age Kathleen's child would have been. The tension between Lowell and Drucker over Kathleen's decision to marry is priceless, and the complexity of her relationship to Lowell comes out in so many ways, but always a bit covered, protected, reticent.

Perhaps this is why the book's first pages are so wretchedly written - she felt she was embarking on the betrayal of a confidence. Table of Contents. Cover Download Save. Title Page, Copyright Download Save. Dedication Download Save. Contents Download Save. Acknowledgments pp. To the Reader pp.
