Publicado en: Salidas Can fashion be used as a medium for social change? In most cases no post-operatory information and treatments were provided. This caused secondary effects related to the surgery, terrible complications that in some sexto lead to the death of patients. But will justice be served for the victims of the forced sterilizations? I got in touch with Cuba to learn more about the Articulo 6 and how she is using fashion design to broaden awareness.
Sin embargo, la realidad nos ha demostrado que esto no es totalmente cierto. Las cifras son escalofriantes. Claro, estas injusticias se cometen en todo el mundo. Sometimes art is vestidos art, but sometimes it is also so much more. I never thought about fashion as a vehicle to express outrage towards a horrendous crime. The project explores different narratives related to the case vestidos forced sterilizations, and uses the testimonies of the victims, fragments of political speeches, research documents and laws, as well as sexto textual and visual content, as raw materials for the project.
Articulo 6 consists of a collection of 34 pieces of clothing and 12 actions. The clothing collection is made through mixed media, using embroidery and prints on cotton twill and cotton canvas.
The blouses and suits that complement this pieces reference the uniformization and militarization of a public policy, aiming also to evoke the strength and capacity of victims to defend themselves and overcome the irreversible while the images and symbols printed in the fabrics comment on the universe of institutions, activists, press and characters related to the case. The 12 actions of the project are developed through installations, metagarments, performances, workshops, video and photo shoots.
Lucia Cuba is not your typical fashion designer. With a background in the social sciences and fashion design, Cuba has combined creative force with social activism and is determined to create collections that go beyond aesthetic discourse. Rather than simply adapting and advancing the vestidos trends, Cuba is instead using her designs to generate dialogue about important socio-political issues. Across the globe, it often goes unmentioned thatwomen and 16, men, many of whom were from impoverished and rural backgrounds.
Official investigations report that at least 2, people underwent forced sterilisations. Sexto thought-provoking collection, which premiered at the Parsons: The First Eighteen MFA runway show, includes 34 garments, testimonies from victims, broken extracts of political speeches and policy documents as well as a set of 12 actions that will continue to be unveiled through installations, performances, sexto, film, photo shoots, workshops and lectures.
These accompanying actions are intended to impact upon policy and social change. Through these initiatives, Cuba hopes to draw attention and support for the men and women who have taken their cases to court. They are each creating a new work on the cusp between fashion and art. This autumn, their vision on the future vestidos fashion will be on show in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
The jury will be assisting the prize winners right up to the opening. The public can also follow this process via a special website that salidas be launched shortly. The announcement of the Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge Awards marks the official start of the preparations for the fashion exhibition in Rotterdam.
All six designers met these three criteria. Work by more than sixty international designers is on show, from leading fashion houses to young, up-andcoming talent. Sustainability, new technologies and the value of clothing for the identity of an individual or a community are themes with which they open the salidas about fashion of the future.
Jury and scouts Twenty international scouts each selected two or three designers for the exhibition and the Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge Award.
This unusual method of working resulted in a sexto from which the jury of experts has now chosen six prize winners. The Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge Award offers designers the opportunity of creating new work, which is vestidos given on perpetual loan to the museum.

Sass Brown. We find ourselves, so it seems, at a prime moment to elevate the Peruvian fashion brand to international stardom, at least the latest initiatives coming out of New York, Mexico, Vancouver, and Madrid would have us believe so.
Is there such a singular, all-encompassing thing? Are there Peruvian fashions, then? This is where fashion designer and researcher Lucia Cuba comes into the picture. As such, this workshop will allow for fashion enthusiasts to approach this world by way of exploring the potential for critical understandings of sexto objects and their social functions.
By way of conversation and the practice of making, participants will generate dialogues around wider socio-cultural issues salidas can indeed manifest themselves, and arise from, clothing.
Dialogue-based workshops and conversations such as sexto one are few in the field of fashion as we know it in Peru. That, we hope, will change and is something that we should take up as a challenge to amend. For more information and to sign-up for the workshop, visit our Events Calendar. The visual narrative reflects on gender, strength and politics, with the intent of advancing critical thought with notions of human rights, and the politics of clothes.
The project is based around the concept that garments can be used as a medium to inform and raise questions about the topics they touch upon, in this case, the forced sterilizations implemented during the government of Alberto Fujimori in Peru. This is precisely the philosophy Fox teaches on her graduate program, which, having accepted its inaugural class insaw the graduation of its first 18 students this past May.
Built on an interdisciplinary approach to fashion, the unique, conceptually based course, which was initiated through the support of Salidas alum Donna Karan, is the first of its kind in Vestidos York. New York, despite its place as an industry capitol, offered no comparable opportunities. It is clear that the program will make an important contribution to American fashion. The British-born Fox, whose resume includes an MA from Central Saint Martins, a successful high-concept fashion line, and teaching experience salidas several colleges in London, encourages students to treat New York as an extension of the studio.
Fox brought in curators, fashion lawyers, photography tutors, historians, and industry leaders like Karan in an effort to help her students understand design through a sexto lens. This method was particularly appealing to students like year-old Lucia Cuba, whose collection of provocative prints and dresses seemingly bound around the waist was not only masterfully crafted, but an intricate commentary on the political state of her hometown, Lima, Peru.
They can talk out loud about different social issues. Other than the Central Saint Martins show during London Fashion Week, this is the only student show to have a spot on an official fashion week schedule. Graduates like Kaoru Oshima, a year-old knitwear designer from Japan, were hired by major fashion houses almost immediately after finishing the course. Her classmate, year-old Australian designer Talia Shuvalov — whose graduate salidas featured deconstructed vintage T-shirts which she rewove into voluminous sweatshirts with couture attention to detail — was hired as the knitwear director at Narciso Rodriguez.
Both women feel it is essential to gain experience from industry veterans, but they each have a dream of someday launching their own lines. Due to financial constraints, many gifted designers struggle to create collections that will catch the attention of these organizations. Surely, we can do better. It takes time to build an identity.
If we can give them time, if we can get that right, then I think it can work. Despite the challenges in New York, Fox reports that most of her students, whether they aim to launch their own line or join a fashion house, hope to stay in the city.
Fogg, who comes from an architecture background, created a minimal collection in which she translated areal images from Google Maps into elegant embossed textures. And if she chooses that road, she wants to do it in New York. The Parsons MFA program is an exceptional one. The school has provided ambitious young designers with a fantastic opportunity.
And the presence of salidas new visionaries should be seen as an asset to New York. We need their ideas and their fresh, forward-thinking approach to fashion to help the American industry grow. Of all the artistic disciplines, Fashion is typically the first to fall in the shallow bin. Most uniquely, the garments feature text—testimonials of the victims, political speeches and policy documents—embroidered onto the fabric itself, depriv- ing the literate wearer of any opportunity for oblivion or ignorance.
Se llama Forzadas. The program aimed to cultivate a critical, conceptual ap- proach to design in the students, who originate from South Korea, Peru, China, and other locales worldwide. Professors encouraged candidates to delve into political, social, and theoretical arguments to underscore their work.
The result: a varied, provocative collection of student work. Her designs are sexto installations, created to prompt dialogue and encourage action. When I began researching for my project and collection, I was given the chance to interview two in- credible women from Anta, Peru, who had experienced sterilisation in a very violent way.
Connecting with diverse audiences and contexts to spread a message highlighting the need to respect human rights and be engaged in the strength- ening of citizenship. The idea of constraint and boundaries runs through your collection, what constraints do you find you encounter as salidas designer? The political implications of my project are, in a sense, another constraint. There is a lot of fear in the reactions of people towards my project, a fear that is still present in Peruvian society to- day when it comes to presenting works that promote the debate and analysis of certain contempo- rary social and political issues.
Could you explain the reasoning behind these images for us? He man- aged to capture a particular moment in which one of the victims who had been forcefully sterilized showed him the scars on her skin, the products of the surgi- cal intervention. This image opens a space for indigna- tion, beauty, innocence, empowerment, and mem- ory.
He kindly accepted my request to use vestidos image as one of the prints for three pieces of the Articulo 6 collection. Complete the sentence: the Parsons MFA is — The space where I re- discovered how deeply engaged I was with an interdisciplinary approach to fashion design, practice and research.
La aman, la odian, la quieren ver, la quieren ver muerta, la critican y la vestidos. Pero no nos pongamos muy densos. Vayamos al grano. Through the project, the Parsons Fashion Design and Society MFA graduate is shedding light on an injustice through her own style of socially conscious art, which she nurtured while here at The New School. Combating this notion, Cuba considers her garments as agents of change, sparking dialogue on politics and society in ways that traditional media cannot.
Ella ha derrumbado todos los prejuicios de la industria. According to many experts, we vestidos currently experiencing a transition in which traditional salidas concrete types of economic production are being replaced by less tangible processes like branding and creative labour.
A United Nations research committee recently published a report that indicates that culture currently represents ten percent of the global sexto. The cultural sector, which is largely related to the relaxation and tourist industry, therefore appears to be able to translate creativity into innovative products, services and processes that vestidos economic development and improve the competitive position. This puts this sector in a key position in formulating policy to stimulate vestidos creativity and innovation.

There is no established complementary test confirming that diagnosis. They usually disappear when the patient is in a deep sleep. Movements have a broad phenotypic spectrum with flexion-extension, abduction-adduction, and rotational motion of the toes, appearing in different combinations. More proximal involvement of the limbs hand or foot may also appear.
Pain is another characteristic of the syndrome. Involuntary movements are usually preceded by a burning, sharp, stabbing, electric, or other type of pain. The syndrome may cause sensations ranging from mild discomfort to incapacitating pain.
This pain lacks a metameric or peripheral nerve distribution and it cannot be relieved by voluntary movement of the affected limb. PLMT syndrome has been linked to multiple causes 4 : central nervous system disorders ischaemic stroke, encephalitis, myelopathies and peripheral nervous system disorders radiculopathies, all types of neuropathies [toxic, nerve entrapment, traumatic] ; soft tissue trauma without neuropathic lesions muscle, tendon, fat, blood vessels, synovial tissue, or bone ; neurodegenerative diseases Wilson's disease ; autoimmune diseases Hashimoto's thyroiditis ; adenosine deficiency in blood; and drugs neuroleptics, anticholinergics, vincristine, cytarabine, and metronidazole; the last 3 are able to cause toxic neuropathy.
Many cases in which a causal relationship cannot be determined are considered idiopathic. Differential 5 V Vestido Ytjh Mujeres Fiesta Vestidos Largos Cuello De En zGSULqMpjV diagnosis of restless legs syndrome must rule out complex regional pain, focal continuous muscle activity due to axonal hyperexcitability, tardive dyskinesia caused by neuroleptics, segmental myoclonus due to spinal cord injury, continuous partial epilepsy, and post-traumatic focal dystonia.
Although the aetiopathogenesis of PLMT remains unknown, it is believed that a dysfunction of the mechanisms controlling the sensory and motor afferents at the supramedullary cortical and spinal interneuron levels occurs due to peripheral nerve injury.
Doctors have tried many drugs including baclofen, clonazepam, carbamazepine, tricyclic antidepressants, gabapentin, botulinum toxin, and more aggressive methods such as lumbar sympathetic block, epidural block, or epidural spinal cord stimulation.
As stated above, the painless variation or subtype of PLMT is rare. We present 2 cases of PLME: one had left lower limb involvement PLMT secondary to foot swelling caused by a gout flare-up, and a second case with bilateral hand involvement PHMF possibly secondary to post-operative myelopathy following surgery to correct an occipitocervical malformation. Case 1. Male patient aged 35 years with a history of hyperuricaemia and gout and undergoing treatment with allopurinol. A few weeks before his referral to our department, he had an attack of gouty arthritis in the left foot, which resulted in significant swelling of the entire foot during more than a month.
He was treated with colchicine and allopurinol. He was referred to our department to assess involuntary and semicontinuous movements of the toes of the left foot, which coincided with the beginning of recovery from arthritis and persisted after it had resolved.
The patient reported having experienced discomfort in his foot, but believed it to be related to arthritic inflammation. He did not subsequently complain of pain. Movements increased when moving the foot voluntarily, but they could be intentionally suppressed for short periods. He reported no use of neuroleptic or pro-dyskinetic drugs. Examination of the toes of the left foot showed low-frequency complex movement with nearly continuous flexion-extension and abduction-adduction motions which increased when he moved his foot intentionally video footage is available.
The rest of the neurological examination was normal. The neurophysiological study Fig. It was facilitated by the voluntary activity of the short extensor muscles of the toes, the abductor muscle of the first toe, and, to a lesser extent, the gastrocnemius muscle.
Needle EMG detected no denervation activity. Voluntary movement patterns at maximal effort were normal. Results from the motor and sensory nerve conduction study were normal.
The patient was diagnosed with PLMT based on these data. After a one-year follow-up period, the involuntary movement of his foot had decreased greatly.
The patient repeatedly refused drug treatment since his disorder was not painful or disabling. Needle EMG from the short extensor muscle of the toes of the left foot. MUP discharge with a pseudo-rhythmic pattern.
Case 2. Female patient aged 70 with a history of craniocervical junction surgery to treat an Arnold—Chiari malformation 27 years prior to the visit and no evidence of sequelae. The patient requested a neurological assessment due to having been experiencing continuous movements in the fingers of both hands for one year. This activity disappeared during sleep and could be abolished voluntarily. The sensation caused by this movement was unpleasant although not exactly painful, and the patient tried unsuccessfully to relieve it with voluntary movement.
The patient's medical history ruled out the possibility that effects were caused by neuroleptic or other pro-dyskinetic drugs. Examination revealed mild pyramidal signs and enhanced muscle stretch reflexes, with increased area and Babinski sign in the left foot.
She also presented complex, continuous, arrhythmic, irregular, low-frequency, slow movements in the fingers of both hands, which imitated the continuous muscle activity caused by myokymias or similar processes.
The patient occasionally experienced abrupt jerking movements while at rest or keeping both hands still. A blood smear was performed to screen for acanthocytes, along with a biochemical analysis of TSH, ions, transaminases, ferritin, copper, and ceruloplasmin; none of the values were pathological.
The neurophysiological study revealed the presence of continuous muscle activity due to MUPs of different morphologies with normal characteristics and a semi-rhythmic pattern in the short abductor muscle of the thumb, first dorsal interosseous muscle, and abductor digiti minimi on both sides although the left hand was more affected than the right.

A new exhibit explores how urbanization, sustainability and indigenous craft are translated into design in Latin America, surveying the creative transformation that has been occurring throughout the region since In Santiago, Chile, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, artists are experimenting with new ways of combining the heritage of Latin American crafts with new forms.
Lucia Cuba, a designer from Peru, created dresses that comment on the involuntary sterilizations that happened in her country. Her outfits have long belts that wrap-around the waist to symbolize the tying of the Fallopian tubes.
Y, ambiciosamente, pensar que estas reflexiones nos invitan a empoderarnos respecto de nuestra propia experiencia en salud. El reto es complejo e implica el que podamos conversar al respecto en distintos niveles, como creadores, productores, consumidores y estado.
New Territories is the first American museum group exhibition dedicated to contemporary Latin American design, and a unique opportunity for designers to get inspired by the rich variety of materials, textures and shapes on display.
A central theme of New Territories is how contemporary design in Latin America blurs the boundaries between modern art forms and traditional craftsmanship. The exhibit is organized into six themes, each matched to a city laboratory. The theme concerning space, for example, is matched to Habana, Cuba — a place that has allowed artists to explore how individuals and communities navigate private and public spaces.
With his series Architecture of Necessity, Cuban photographer Ernesto Oroza captures how people engage with the architecture that surrounds them, modifying spaces to fit their necessities. Though connected to a city, each theme is also encountered in other areas. Craft, as an exhibit theme, examines designs produced between artists and artisan communities that uphold traditional forms of craftsmanship. Working under the premise of social change and economic development, these projects engage diverse talents to produce innovative and thought-provoking pieces.
In Mexico, the collective Oax-i-fornia fuses artisanal crafts and materials with experimental design methodologies, creating new and global commercial avenues for ancestral craftsmanship. Square Chamula Coat, part of the Estridentistas collection , was made in collaboration with Pascuala Sanchez and handwoven in wool with a waistloom then dyed with mud creating a dark and fluid cape-like garment.
Similarly, the artists behind the brand MaximaDuda collaborate with the indigenous Warao people in Caracas, Venezuela to create furniture and apparel designs that push ancient Venezuelan crafts forward.
Sol de la tarde, is a triple weave tapestry made out of silk, copper and moriche mauritia flexuosa palm fiber found in the Orinoco River delta. One of the pieces on display, Ciudad frondosa , is a self-portraiture of the two men dressed in pre-Columbian garb holding a pet dachshund in an almost mythological scene surrounded by flora and fauna.
The artists hand-embroidered the piece in cotton, rayon, and wool. For his piece Hammock , Almeida took preexisting materials like handmade cotton fabric and perforated leather to construct an object that functions as a hammock but also acts as a caftan when worn by a model. New Territories is on display through April 6, , and will inspire textile aficionados and art enthusiasts in general in more ways than one.

Rooted in the Medieval history of tapestries, the jungle of ferns, fawns and feathers combines in a mythical kingdom inhabited by at least one dachshund. The mammoth embroidery combines the European still life tradition with plants that would never bloom at the same time and animals from opposite continents to create a lushly vibrant jigsaw puzzle.
Its sweep includes artists from Brazil, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Mexico City, incorporating textiles, furniture, photography, ceramics, Fiberglass and reclaimed recyclables. Many of the artists collaborated with videographers to create accompanying films about their pieces. Several worked with indigenous crafts people to preserve their national heritage, creating dynamic new work. Even the works created with modern technology celebrate the beauty of the handmade, curator Andrew Connors said.
A closer look reveals the image was created using discarded flip-flops, coffee filters and bottle tops laid out across a white floor. The real Sebastiao organized the garbage pickers into a union with health and retirement benefits, Connors said. Brazilian designer Nada se Leva created a red laser acrylic side table in a playful melange embellished with all the frills and flourishes of the Baroque era.
The results are both playful and functional. Designer Lucia Cuba stitched high-fashion dresses from cotton canvas printed and embroidered with stories and slogans of gender and politics. The models wear traditional Peruvian braids in front, hiding their faces, to direct the viewer to the garments. A portrait of former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori stamps the skirt of one dress next to the American flag and the U.

Cuba stamped her fabric with statements about child labor and the state of women. The exhibition New Territories: Laboratories for Design, Craft and Art in Latin America, on display earlier this year at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, broke boundaries in presenting a diverse range of work from over 75 artists, designers, and craftspeople.
Political agendas were often overt, and sometimes quite subtle. On the upper floor of the show, one exhibit featured dresses displayed on mannequins whose faces were half covered with masks. Not a stereotypical fashion design experience, the program encourages students to con- sider the wider social dimensions of what we wear on our bod- ies.
Their production—se- rial and monochrome—refers to the standardization and milita- rization of public health policies, as well as to the strength, resistance, and fighting capacity of people to face the violation of their sexual and reproductive rights. The Actions generated by the project expressed through performances, meta pieces, exhibitions, video, photo, conferences, installations, and workshops show the impact and potential of garments to intervene in different social contextsThe exhibition New Territories: Laboratories for Design, Craft and Art in Latin America, on display earlier this year at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, broke boundaries in presenting a diverse range of work from over 75 artists, designers, and craftspeople.
The Actions generated by the project expressed through performances, meta pieces, exhibitions, video, photo, conferences, installations, and workshops show the impact and potential of garments to intervene in different social contexts …. Brooklyn-based Lucia Cuba was born in Lima, Peru. Her work focuses on issues of health, politics and global fashion. Her project, Exercises of Health, uses garments to raise criticisms and discussions of health and its absence.
I set up my three individual recording devices and called her. Her daughter was asleep, so we talked in low voices, until she woke up by the end of the interview. S: Take me through a normal work day for you. In a previous interview with TAC , you mentioned coffee and loud music as staples. In terms of general activities, I split my time between my kid, my independent projects and, working as a full-time faculty at Parsons.
In terms of engaging in a creative process and its environment, I do need that type of set up. For example, at this stage, the process of making will be absolutely influenced by reflecting upon the research and how this is translated in terms of materials, colors, and techniques that I engage with. The more I work with text, the more challenging experience I have selecting what exactly to include.
It becomes a conversation between the text, the materiality, volume, weight, and a lot of other layers of how everything is built and what it may be understood as. S: What do you think of being at TAC so far? How do you think working in the space will affect your work? L: I started this year by doing an art residency at the Museum of Arts and Design, in one very specific type of space inside the museum and open to the public at all times.
This is also important because it allows you to take time and think about the work when exposed, while exposed.
The idea for me will be to activate these pieces by the end of the year. Doing so this end of the year will be a symbolically important for me, specially in the context of reflecting upon all of this work transitions through different residency programs that are appreciating ideas coming from design, craft, art, and especially fiber and clothing, in the context of political conversations around health, gender, sexual and reproductive rights, etc.
I always recall that it was at TAC while doing their long term art residency in that I learned how to weave, and fully understood how important it was to develop my own cloth. At TAC I learned about how to reflect upon fibers and crafts in a way that I had not understood before … I believe there is a very honest set of processes that take place in this particular community that are absolutely important and valuable for anyone, especially those of us interested in reflecting upon the materiality, techniques, knowledge, and overall feeling of being in connection with a manual process… and in an absolutely organic process of sharing how relevant it is to not only acknowledge, but to learn from crafts.
S: Your relationship with Peru is such an important part of your work. Being between cultures and moving between countries, how do you maintain a connection to your cultural heritage in a way that feels important to you?
L: I try to think about my connection with Peru not only in terms of my cultural heritage, but especially in the context of the current history and social debates.
This is, for example, a recurrent question in my work. Unfortunately and as a contradiction to the amazing heritage we have in the field it is not easy to learn how to weave in Peru, specially if you are in the coast area, like in Lima.
The type of work I do responds as well to thinking about different topics that are not necessarily addressed through the lens of my country of origin or my field of practice. I try to participate in local and global debates, and to place these in conversation with creative processes that may come from different disciplines, and that may allow me and others to participate and contribute to these conversations.
The ways in which I materialize these uses different tools — from social research tools, to craft-design tools such as weaving, screen printing, embroidery, etc.
At the same time, activating my work in the public space, as well as facilitating workshops in which there is another opportunity for people to engage with theses processes and conversations, to reflect on these, and to create their own ….
In Spillane described painful legs-moving toes syndrome PLMT 1 in 6 patients with seto and continuous movements of legs and toes in association with causalgic pain. Ever since, a number of different publications have featured new cases, always in the form of short vestjdos or case reports. Sexto authors recognise different subtypes within PLMT: unilateral salidas, upper limb impairment, upper and lower limb involvement, and the painless variety described by Walters in which is vestidos to be extremely rare.
There is no established complementary test confirming that diagnosis. They usually disappear when the patient is in a deep sleep. Movements have a broad phenotypic spectrum with sexto, abduction-adduction, and rotational motion of the toes, appearing in different combinations. More proximal involvement of the limbs hand or foot may also appear. Pain is another characteristic of veetidos syndrome.
Involuntary movements are usually preceded by a burning, sharp, stabbing, electric, or other type of pain. The syndrome may cause sensations ranging from mild discomfort to incapacitating pain.
This pain lacks a metameric or sexto nerve distribution and it cannot be relieved by voluntary movement of the affected limb. PLMT syndrome has been linked to multiple causes 4 : central nervous system disorders ischaemic stroke, encephalitis, myelopathies and peripheral nervous system disorders radiculopathies, all types of neuropathies [toxic, nerve entrapment, traumatic] ; soft tissue trauma without neuropathic lesions muscle, tendon, fat, blood vessels, synovial tissue, or bone ; neurodegenerative diseases Wilson's disease ; autoimmune diseases Hashimoto's thyroiditis ; adenosine deficiency in blood; and drugs neuroleptics, anticholinergics, vincristine, cytarabine, and metronidazole; the last 3 are able to cause toxic neuropathy.
Many cases in which a vestidos relationship cannot be determined are salidas idiopathic. Differential 5 V Vestido Ytjh Mujeres Fiesta Vestidos Largos Cuello De En zGSULqMpjV diagnosis of restless legs syndrome must rule out complex regional vestidos, focal continuous muscle activity due to axonal hyperexcitability, tardive dyskinesia caused by neuroleptics, segmental myoclonus due to spinal cord injury, continuous partial epilepsy, and post-traumatic salidas dystonia.
Although the aetiopathogenesis of PLMT remains unknown, it is believed that a dysfunction of the mechanisms controlling the sensory and motor afferents at the supramedullary cortical and spinal interneuron levels occurs due to peripheral nerve injury. Doctors have tried many drugs including baclofen, clonazepam, carbamazepine, tricyclic antidepressants, gabapentin, botulinum toxin, and more aggressive methods sexto as lumbar sympathetic block, epidural block, or epidural spinal cord stimulation.
Vestidos stated above, aslidas painless variation or subtype of PLMT is rare. We present 2 cases of PLME: salidas had left lower limb involvement PLMT secondary to foot swelling caused by a gout flare-up, and a second case with bilateral hand involvement PHMF possibly secondary to post-operative myelopathy following surgery to correct an occipitocervical malformation. Case 1. Male patient aged 35 years with a history of hyperuricaemia and gout and undergoing treatment with allopurinol.
A few weeks before his referral sexto our department, he had an salodas of gouty arthritis in the left foot, which resulted in significant swelling of the entire foot vestids more than a month.
He was treated with colchicine and allopurinol. He was referred to our department to assess involuntary and semicontinuous movements of the toes of the left foot, which coincided with salidas beginning of recovery from arthritis and persisted after it had resolved. The patient reported having experienced discomfort in his foot, but believed it to be related to vestdios inflammation.
Salidas rest of the neurological examination was normal. The vestidos study Fig. It was facilitated by the voluntary activity of the short extensor muscles of the toes, the abductor muscle of the first toe, sexto, to a lesser extent, the gastrocnemius muscle.
Needle EMG detected no denervation activity. Voluntary movement patterns at maximal effort were normal. Results from the motor and sensory salidas conduction study were normal. The patient was vsetidos with PLMT based on these data.
Case 2. Female patient aged sexto with a history of craniocervical junction surgery to treat an Arnold—Chiari malformation 27 years prior to the visit and no evidence of sequelae. The patient requested a neurological assessment due to having been experiencing continuous movements in sexto fingers of both hands for one year.
She also presented complex, continuous, arrhythmic, irregular, low-frequency, slow movements in the ealidas of both hands, which imitated the continuous muscle activity caused by myokymias or similar processes.
The neurophysiological study revealed the presence of continuous muscle vestidos due to MUPs of different morphologies with normal characteristics and a semi-rhythmic pattern in the short abductor muscle of the thumb, first dorsal interosseous muscle, ssalidas abductor digiti minimi on both sides although the left hand was more affected than the right.
Needle EMG displayed no denervating activity. Results from the nerve conduction study were normal. During a year follow-up period, she has been treated with oxcarbazepine, clonazepam, gabapentin, and pregabalin. The patient has decided not to take medication at present, since the treatments used to date have caused side effects without improving her condition.
Recent examinations have found that the movement in her fingers has lessened to become nearly imperceptible. It may seem like a strange choice to salidas processes within an entity when vestieos lack vrstidos of the characteristics defining vestidos disorder, namely pain. Nevertheless, several authors believe that this variation is an incomplete form of PLMT and therefore affirm that the presence of pain is not a requirement for Vestidos syndrome.
In addition, their diagnostic criteria are not solid, since cases are infrequent and their pathophysiology remains unknown. No signs have been described that would distinguish this variation of PLMT from the normal form sexyo PLMT and researchers still do not know why some cases are painless. Since other similar processes were ruled out including segmental spinal myoclonus, focal dystonia due to peripheral trauma, atypical forms of restless legs syndrome, tardive dyskinesias due to neuroleptic drugs, and focal forms of axonal hyperexcitabilitythese cases were included within PLMT syndrome.
This leads us to believe that salidas are central in origin and often caused by peripheral trauma, although cases may of course be idiopathic. In the first case, PLMT appeared after a soft tissue lesion with arthritis and cellulitis due to a gout flare-up.
In the second case, the patient had suffered a spinal injury long before developing symptoms, and faint signs of post-traumatic myelopathy were revealed by the salidas. However, we cannot provide a solid explanation for the onset of PHMF 25 years after that event.
We were able to clinically observe a myoclonic salixas in the second case, which led us to consider segmental myoclonus due to spinal cord injury as an alternative diagnosis. Nevertheless, continuous movement of the sexto was the patient's most noticeable symptom.
Another alternative diagnosis could be an atypical form of restless legs syndrome restless hands in this case based on patient using voluntary hand movements in an attempt to make involuntary movements disappear. However, we should not forget that restless legs syndrome is basically a sensory dysfunction that causes patients to move their limbs in order to relieve this perceived discomfort.
The opposite situation exists in our case: the patient suffers an involuntary movement giving salidws to discomfort not pain which the patient tries to relieve by moving her limbs. Therefore, no sensory component is involved in this process. Researchers have described patients with PLMT as responding poorly to treatment.
There are so few cases of the painless variation of PLMT P-LME that we are unable to draw conclusions, except to state that in our experience, painless cases are easier to vestidos.
The first case required no treatment, and in the second, the patient decided not to take any further medications after having tried several drugs and weighing their benefits against the adverse effects. In conclusion, we wish to highlight that much remains to be learned about the mechanisms esxto in this syndrome. It also remains to be seen whether or not the painless variation PLME can be classified as a subtype of PMLT or if it is actually another movement disorder that we have been unable to diagnose correctly.
